Some Good Instructions

This is the post you can add your *good* instructions to.

They can be instructions you've thought of for yourself, or they can be ones you've found somewhere. Remember that they don't need to be too comprehensive - you're going write a whole instruction manual for Task 4, so there's no need to produce one now.

You post by clicking on the Comment link at the bottom of this post, and that will take you to a page where you can find a text box in which to add your instructions.

*REMEMBER TO WRITE YOUR NAME AT THE END OF YOUR INSTRUCTIONS* If you don't, I won't know whose they are.

This part of Task 2 is worth 5 marks in all.

---------

You can also use someone else's instructions posted here to complete the second part of Task 2, which is worth 10 marks.

This time you need to make a judgement about the instructions according to the information contained in the extract from Effective Writing (at the end of your Compendium).

You do this by simply adding another Comment, but this time start your comment like this:

"Comment on (name of original poster)'s Instructions by (your name)"

That way, I know which instructions you're basing your comments on, and also who the person making the comments is.

---------

I will be sending you a private mail with a mark for each part of Task 4 later on in the week.

You'll be doing more instruction-writing for Task 3, which we'll be doing in class on Friday, 21st April. If you manage to get both parts of Task 2 on the blog by Wednesday, 19th April, I'll have the chance to give you feedback before Task 3 needs to be complete.

As always, mail me and ask if there's anything which isn't clear.

How to change your air filter in your car

Steps

1.Open the hood.
2.Locate you air filter, usually found on the top of the engine. On cars with carburettors it is in a round piece of metal about the size of a medium pizza, fuel-injected cars have square or rectangular air filter housing that may be off to the side of the engine.
3. Unscrew or unclamp the top of the air filter housing.
4.Lift out the air filter. It should be a round or rectangular filter made of paper or plastic, with a rubber rim.
5.Clean the area with a vacuum cleaner or seal the top of the carburettor. This will keep debris out of the carburettor as you continue to clean the housing
6.Clean out any dirt and bugs from the inside of the air filter housing with a rag.
7.Replace the filter with a new filter. Consult your manual to determine the proper filter for your car.
8.Replace the cover and close the hood.

Comments
I think this is a good instruction because it is an easy general instruction to follow, but I know that many people will have a problem opening the hood. But in the same way it is a general instruction and it is not possible to cover how to open the hood for all cars.
And the explanation how a filter housing looks on a carburettor car is brilliant.

How to Celebrate an Ethiopian Christmas

1. Make sure to set up a manger scene that includes the Three Magi. Legend has it that the king bearing frankincense was King Balthazar of Ethiopia, .

2. Infuse the celebrations with the essential oil frankincense, which was traditionally a gift suitable for a high priest. Today you can mix frankincense with spices or seeds to create different aromas, or you can burn frankincense incense.

3. Attend a local Christian Orthodox service if there are any nearby. Keep in mind that the services sometimes require that men and women sit in separate areas and that services can last up to three hours.

4. Sing carols and carry candles either during the service or afterwards.

5. Prepare an Ethiopian feast for the Christmas meal that includes a main course, such as doro wat (a spicy chicken stew), injera bread (flat round bread) and homemade wine or beer. Keep in mind that injera bread is used to scoop and eat food, hence replacing utensils. The Christmas meal, which is served January 7, is preceded by major preparations that include the purchase and slaughter of an animal (typically a goat or cow).

6. Encourage the children to play ganna or leddat, which is a form of field hockey in which sticks with hooks on one end are used. The game is played by two opposing teams and the stick and ball are made from locally grown trees. In Ethiopia the teams often represent certain regions and the rivalry can be fierce. According to tradition, shepherds celebrated when they heard of Jesus' birth by playing such a game.

I think this sounds as a good instruction. However, I have never attended an Ethiopian Christmas myself but anyone who has might have some joy of these instructions.

How to do a leaf rubbing

1. Find some interesting leaves. Ferns, oaks, maples and birches work well. Avoid pines or anything that is not fairly flat and smooth.

2. Lay the leaf face side up on a table or flat surface.

3. Cover the leaf with tracing paper or other thin paper such as onionskin paper.

4. Sharpen a regular pencil and hold it sideways so that the tip is on its side on the paper. You can also use a thick drawing pencil.

5. Lightly rub the side of the pencil tip over the paper covering the leaf. Make sure you cover the entire area and that you also rub around the edges of the leaf so that you can see the contrast in this area.

Consider framing your rubbing.

Try making a grouping of different leaves and doing a rubbing of the entire grouping.

Try working with colored pencils for a different look.

Avoid mechanical pencils as they are too thin to work well for this project.

Installing the AirPort Card in Your Power Mac G4

1. Shut down the computer (choose Shut Down from the Special menu) and unplug all cables except the power cord.

2. Touch the metal PCI access covers on the back of the computer to discharge static electricity. Avoid walking around until you’ve finished installing the card.

3. Unplug the power cord. Then lift the latch on the side of the computer.

4. Gently lower the side panel onto a clean, flat surface. Lower it onto a soft cloth to avoid scratching the case.

5. Remove the metal clip and pull the AirPort Card from the iMac AirPort Card adapter. The adapter and clip are not used with your Power Mac.

6. Insert the AirPort Card through the opening in the PCI card guide, and into the connector on the main logic board.

7. Connect the antenna cable to the connector on the end of the AirPort Card.
The cable is usually stowed on the side of the PCI card guide.

8. Raise the side panel and press it against the case.

9. Squeeze the side panel until it snaps into place.

This instruction is only useful if you have an iBook G4 computer.
But in the same time it is easy to fallow and it will not take much time to installed the AirPort.

Microwave oven - Melissa

1. Place the food in the oven and close the door.
2. Choose the required microwave power using the top knob on the operating panel.
3. Set the timer on the operating panel to the required cooking time.

The oven starts automatically when you selected the microwave power and cooking time.
Once the cooking time has passed, the oven stops automatically and a signal rings.
Cooking can be interrupted at any time by opening the oven door. If the oven door is closed again, cooking resumes.
When the oven is not in use, the timer should be at 0.

Gluten-free White Bread (makes 1 loaf)
25 g. yeast
400 ml warm water (approx 37C)
30g margarine or 2 tbsp of oil
1-1.5 tsp of salt
500 g. of gluten-free flour mix (approx. 800 ml)

1.Crumble the yeast into a bowl. Pour the warm water over the yeast and stir until the yeast has dissolved.
2.Add margarine, salt and finally the flour mix. (We recommend weighing the flour mix, since gluten-free flour tends to be compacted).
3.Whisk the mixture using an electric whisk for at least 5 minutes.
4.Pour the mixture into a grease loaf-tin (approx. 1.5 litres).
5.Allow the bread to rise under a cloth for approx. 35 minutes.
6.Bake in the lower part of the oven at 200C for approx. 25 minutes.
7.Allow the bread to cool uncovered on a rack.
